The best cheap scented candles? That’s a matter of opinion. Just like finding your favourite perfume, picking a signature scented candle can be tricky. Maybe you’re big into powdery rose notes, or lured by the sleep-inducing properties of lavender. Or perhaps it’s cosy, leather-spiced scents that have you handing over your hard-earned cash.
Whatever your fragrance preferences may be, we’re sure you’ll agree that there’s nothing quite like a flickering flame to set the mood at home – especially when the evenings seem to start at 3pm, and you’re spending 23 hours a day stuck to the sofa.
We’ve put some serious research into digging out the very best scented candles out there, from the big-budget blockbusters to boast about on your Insta grid, to the cheap candles that don’t scrimp on quality.

Here are the best scented candles to light for soothing smells and a relaxing atmosphere…

2. Yankee Candle
Compared to a lot of Yankee Candle’s other scents, this one is pretty simple but there’s a reason it made the list. It’s not the fake, almost medicine-like cherry scent you get from a lot of candles. It’s the real deal. Plus, to make it even better, the sweet cherry smell is married with almond and cinnamon for a subtly exquisite finished product. See, we told you not to count this candle out before you gave it a shot.

3. NEST Fragrances Votive Candle – Cedar Leaf & Lavendar
Carole Radziwill, author and former Real Housewives of New York City cast member, told us that she loves Nest’s scented candle in Sicilian Tangerine: “You wake up and smell it, and think, It’s going to be a good day. I like the way they burn, too. Some candles are $40, and you burn them for two days and they’re done. These burn long and evenly.” And Nest’s scented candles are very popular with reviewers on Amazon: Close to 1,300 verified purchasers gave this one five stars. One customer writes, “Within a minute of lighting it, the scent fills the room. It doesn’t need to be lit as long as lower-quality candles, and you can smell it even when it’s not lit.” This votive candle is available in a wide range of scents, each with its own loyal fans. In describing the scent of Moroccan Amber, one purchaser says, “This candle smells like Jesus’s cologne.” Many admit that these candles are relatively pricey, but as one writes, “Other candles go to sleep at night dreaming of becoming a Nest candle someday. They are expensive, but worth their weight in gold.”

4. One Fur All Pet House Natural Soy Candle
As much as we love our furry friends, they tend to give off not-so-pleasant smells. We’ve written about these non-toxic candles before, and they’re so great because instead of masking animal odors with a strong fragrance, they’ll actually neutralize them, so your home smells fresh as ever. They come in a bunch of different scents, like Vanilla Creme Brulee and Bamboo Watermint, so you can pick something that works for you. “If you are looking for a product to eliminate bad odors, you will not find anything better than these candles,” wrote one shopper.

How long do scented candles last?
Candles can technically last forever (well, almost), but they can spoil if you don’t look after them properly. Candles might lose their color, for example, especially if left in the sun for too long or kept unsealed.
Candles can also lose their scent pretty quickly, especially the “free-standing” type. That’s why, as you may have noticed, most high quality scented candles come in glass pots or other containers made of tin, ceramic, or concrete, and many even have lids to keep the fragrance locked in.
Pillar and taper scented candles may look pretty, but don’t rely on them to keep their scent. If you’re a candle fiend, you can always buy pillar candles for décor and have a few container candles to keep your house nice and perfumed.
How much should I pay?
Cheap scented candles can be overly sweet and gaudy in colour – and they tend to burn out quickly and aggressively. Pricier candles generally use premium ingredients that burn with a more elegant glow and natural aromas, as well as having a much longer burn time.
In other words, buying a cheap candle for a tenner is generally a false economy. Fragrance levels are typically low too, at around one to two per cent, whereas premium-brand ones offer 10 to 15 per cent, often with oils sourced from top perfumers. All of this costs money, of course: a standard-size high-end candle – around 190g, with a burning time of 40 hours – is likely to cost £30 or more.
How do I choose a scented candle?
This depends on what you’re trying to achieve – relaxation, stimulation, calm, etc. Essential oils have been used for generations as remedies for a range of mental and physical health issues. Lavender oil is said to reduce stress, rose oil eases tension, ylang ylang oil boosts emotional wellbeing and jasmine oil reduces symptoms of anxiety. Expert perfumers combine a mixture of these essential oils into one fragrance blend that can then be made into candles, diffusers, room sprays or perfume.
